Physical Description: Alex has blue eyes, brown hair and a medium build. Depending on how his eyes feel on any given morning, he switches between glasses and contact lenses. Somewhat scrawny as a child, he's spent a lot of time working out and bulking up a bit. He's not ripped, by any means, but his shoulders and chest have broadened, and his arms are well defined. He tries to jog every morning to keep in shape.

Personality: Alex is laid back and very focused on getting his Ph.D. He likes to tease, but isn't malicious and generally knows where to draw the line, though he does occasionally put a toe over it if pushed. He's easy to talk to because he's learned to listen. All of his training in psychology has him focused on all the things people aren't saying, what their body language is telling him, and whether their actions match their words. It's made him very good at reading people, which in turn allows him to put them ease. It's served him well as a teacher, particularly with high school aged children who haven't yet learned how to communicate well. He's fond of practical jokes, keeping up with the latest psych journals, and trying to have fun and be happy. Life is too short for him to waste being miserable.

HISTORY

Alex was born to Andre and Gloria Bedford, the middle of three children. His older sister, Amanda enjoyed having a little brother she could dress up and play house with. When his brother Malcolm was born, he was more than happy to let him be his sister's living doll.

He grew up doing the typical things children do. He played little league baseball and soccer with his brother, but aside from the usual backyard pickup games, he drifted away from sports as he grew older. It wasn't that he didn't enjoy them, he just had little desire to put the amount of effort into them that was required to succeed at that level. Malcolm had gone on play baseball on his college team as the starting short stop. Amanda had fallen in love when she was 20 and was married with two children, whom Alex spoiled rotten.

Alex got a partial scholarship to the local college, and as a sophomore, he had worked hard enough to get a full academic scholarship to LSU. He did the typical thing and was waiter during his time in school, working for tips. He took a couple of years off before beginning his graduate studies at Georgetown. By age 26, he had a Masters Degree in Psychology, a mountain of loan debt and is getting close to having his Ph.D. He's taken on a teaching job at Goldfinch with the understanding that he would finish his degree within the next six months.

During his undergraduate work, his brother Malcolm had come to out him, hoping he would help him break the news to his parents. Alex hadn't been entirely surprised, and had actually been waiting for Mal to accept himself and his preferences. His mother cried and his father hadn't talked to anyone for days. He'd convinced Malcolm to give them a little time, and sure enough, a few hours later, his mother had been telling Malcolm all the things he'd needed to hear. It had taken their father a few days longer to accept facts as they were, and it was only just recently that he could be in the same room with Mal and his boyfriend and be completely comfortable. Alex knew that Andre loved his son and wanted him to be happy, but he was still coming to terms with the path Mal's life would take. He would have liked it if his boy could have a 'normal' life with a wife and kids instead of a life where he was considered abnormal and deviant. Alex's father's main problem with Malcolm's orientation was how much harder it would going to make son's life, but it didn't always translate well in his actions.

Alex's love life left something to be desired. Women considered him to be too aloof and his relationships never lasted long. It wasn't that he wasn't interested, but he'd wanted to get through school before committing to a relationship. Though now that he'd moved to the seemingly middle of nowhere to teach, he didn't hold out much hope that he'd meet anyone. He wanted to get married and settle down, but he was afraid he'd missed his chance.
